Tengeru College has 3 sources of water supply
- a borehole
- an unreliable electric pump from Lake Duluti
- the PapaPump, installed by the Devon Young
Farmers and donated by a North Devon company,
that pumps up clean water from the spring
at the bottom of the hill.

Tengeru College – Papa Pump water system
We met with the Deputy Head, Vernus Karimu
and David, the engineer/water supervisor
and also George, a UK student on his gap
year. The college has a full complement of livestock
to look after as well as the interests of
the people who live around the periphery
of the college. These people have traditionally
relied on the water supplies of the
college. The management of the water supply
is a delicate issue and the college could
face vandalism unless it continues to be
supportive of local needs. The college
property is owned by the Government but funding
seems to be patchy. There are approximately
220 students including some from Georgia
who came looking for husbands. The PapaPump
The PapaPump operates by power generated
by the gravity of water. Devon Young Farmers
took the pump as parts to Tanzania, in their
luggage - to save on import duties/taxes.
The import duty on finished goods into Tanzania
is 50% and there is also additional VAT
to consider. The water source to the upper chamber is
150metres. The delivery head is 33 metres (110 ft) and
the supply head is 5 metres (17 ft). The distance
and rise to the water tower is possibly 300
metres distance with a rise of about
200 metres. The bore on the outflow is only
2 inches....that's why it could be pumped
up so high. There is a relationship
between the input and output bore size and
the head of water needed to pump to given
heights. Tengeru need to put a pipeline across the
fields from the tanks to a local tank so
that locals can get a water supply rather
than having to scramble down a steep embankment,
sometimes resulting in severe injuries. This
will also reduce the likelihood of vandalism.
