USA River Children’s Centre
The centre is home to 35 children - aged
between 2 and 22. Most go to school, some
at a weekly boarding school and one at university.
3 of the children are HIV positive which
presents additional difficulties for the
staff.
Rotarian Geert Holm is a Founder Trustee.
The centre operates with 4 volunteers - mostly
Danish and 8 staff. The volunteers cook
for the children and the staff cook for the
volunteers.
The older pupils sleep 2 to a room, some
4 to a room and the younger ones are 6 to
a room with a bed for an adult if one of
them needs care. There is a meeting room
(for group sessions and training eg sex education),
a dining area, a library/TV room (the TV
is watched once a week), and a computer room
with 2 computers.
A new well was dug 15m down but they now
have to decide if and how to provide water
to some of the villagers - do they give it
or sell it to help fund the cost of the digging
of the well and the running of the orphanage.
