Madeira
A Beautiful Green island belonging to
Portugal
Madeira has beautiful scenery with plenty of beautiful plands and
walking trails along the lavadas (water channels).
Funchal. is the island’s capital with a collection of cobbled streets,
quaint museums and buzzing café and restaurant life. It is a portion of
Portugal sprinkled with a dash of Garden of Eden and Edwardian
Britain.
The name Funchal means Town of Fennel. The island is covered in vivid
bougainvillea, jasmine and other exotic blooms such as the banana
passion fruit plant. It also has an abundance of banana plants.
As well as the Madeira aperetif wines, Madeira is also famous for its
Poncha (honey, rum and lemon). The Madeiran Christmas lunch is port
marinated for 2 days.
We travelled to the spectacular Eira do Serrado with amazing views
over the ‘hidden village' of Curral das Freiras.
Then we travelled down into the Valley of the Nuns to explore the
traditional village which is overshadowed by beautiful mountains with
peaks covered by layers of white clouds. The village is built on the
crater of an extinct volcano. This valley earns its name from the 16th-
century Santa Clara Convent where the nuns used to hide from pirates
who were attacking Funchal.
From there we headed to Câmara de Lobos, a picturesque fishing village, which Winston Churchill once painted during a holiday to Funchal. We tasted Poncha, a
traditional drink of Madeira (honey, rum and lemon) then strolled around the village. The local fish is Black Scabbard, a deep water fish living at 800 to 1000m. Its
skin oxidises when the fish is pulled to the surface. We watched the sinking of the Titanic boat and the rescue of the oarsman.
