Kawarau Gorge
Home of the world’s first
bungee jumping
A beautiful gorge and the film location of many
scenes in the Lord of the Rings - the Pillars of
the Kings, the site of the ‘Argonath’, and the
gigantic statues of the two kings of Gondor
past which the Fellowship sails.
The Kawarau Bridge Bungy
In November 1988, Bungy pioneers AJ Hackett
and Henry van Asch launched the World's first
commercially operated Bungy Jumping Site, off
the historic Kawarau Bridge.
Chard Vineyard
Specialising in Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay,
Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and
Gewurztraminer. The driveway entrance is
virtually opposite the A J Hackett Bungy site at
the Kawarau River. It is a scenic unsealed road
to the picturesque vineyard overlooking the
river. The tastings are free (& there are at least
seven fine wines to try) although a donation is
appreciated if you don't make a purchase.
Gibbston Valley Cheese
The cheesery makes gourmet cheeses
handcrafted in the traditional European style
and made using New Zealand's sheep, cow and
goat milk. The café offers cheese platters and
wine to enjoy on site or takeaway.
